UK Visitor Visa Requirements for UAE Residents

UK Visitor Visa Requirements

Last updated: September 2026

What is a Standard Visitor Visa?

A UK Standard Visitor visa allows visits to the UK for tourism, business, study on courses up to 6 months, medical treatment and other permitted activities. Visitors can usually stay for up to 6 months.

Permitted Activities

Under a Standard Visitor visa, you can visit the UK for tourism, to see family or friends, to volunteer for up to 30 days with a registered charity, to pass through the UK to another country, for certain business activities such as attending a meeting, for certain paid engagements or events as an expert in your profession, to take part in a school exchange programme, to do a recreational course of up to 30 days, or to study, do a placement or take an exam.

You cannot, on this visa, do paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person (unless doing a permitted paid engagement), claim public funds, live in the UK for long periods through frequent or successive visits, or marry or register a civil partnership.

Do You Need a Visa?

Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality. Applicants will either need to apply for a Standard Visitor visa before travelling, apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) that allows a visit of up to 6 months without a visa, or be able to visit without a visa or ETA at all.

For UAE residents, holding UAE residency does not by itself determine whether a UK visa is required. The requirement primarily depends on the passport or nationality of the traveller.

Eligibility Requirements

To be a genuine visitor, applicants must show that they:

  • are coming to do a permitted activity
  • will leave the UK at the end of their visit
  • are able to support themselves and any dependants for the duration of the trip
  • are able to pay for their return or onward journey and any other costs relating to the visit
  • will not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits

Documents and Information Required

In the online application, applicants must provide: travel dates, accommodation details, expected trip cost, current home address and how long they’ve lived there, parents’ names and dates of birth if known, annual income if applicable, and details of any criminal, civil or immigration offences.

Depending on individual circumstances, applicants may also need to provide travel history for the past 10 years, employer’s address and phone number, partner’s details, details of who is paying for the trip, details of UK-based family members, and a TB test certificate if visiting for more than 6 months.

Supporting evidence that may strengthen an application includes:

  • an employer’s letter on headed paper detailing role, salary and length of employment (if employed)
  • an education provider’s letter confirming enrolment and leave of absence (if a student)
  • business registration documents or recent invoices confirming ongoing self-employment (if self-employed)
  • copies of previous passports showing travel history
  • confirmation of legal residence, if not a national of the country of application
  • bank statements or proof of earnings that clearly show access to sufficient funds and the origin of those funds

Certified translations are required for any documents not in English or Welsh, and each translation must include the translator’s confirmation of accuracy, date, full name, signature and contact details.

Documents You Should Not Rely On

Official UK Visas and Immigration guidance lists the following as less useful evidence, which should not generally be relied upon to support an application:

  • Bank statements or letters issued more than 1 year before the application date
  • Credit card statements
  • Driving licence
  • Educational certificates not specifically required for the visa
  • Evidence of car ownership
  • Personal photographs
  • Notarial certificates
  • Business cards
  • Hotel bookings
  • Flight bookings (except when transiting)
  • Photocopies of bank cards
  • Certificates relating to leisure activities (e.g. sports trophies)
  • Travel insurance
  • A sponsor’s utility bills
  • A sponsor’s council tax bills

Submitting the correct supporting documents does not guarantee approval. Applicants are advised to keep this in mind before making any non-refundable travel bookings, particularly when a visa is required before travel.

Application Process

Applicants apply online, then book and attend an appointment at a visa application centre, where their identity is confirmed, biometric information (fingerprints and photo) is taken, and required documents are submitted.

The UK has transitioned to digital immigration status for successful new visit visa applicants. From 1 July 2026, successful new applicants for UK visit visas are generally issued an eVisa rather than a physical visa vignette in their passport.

Processing Time

Once the online application, identity verification and document submission are complete, applicants usually receive a decision within 3 weeks. Faster paid options are available in some cases.

When to Apply

The earliest an applicant can apply is 3 months before travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa to visit the UK?

This depends on nationality. Some nationalities need a Standard Visitor visa, others need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), and some can visit without either. UAE residency alone does not determine whether a visa is required.

How long can I stay in the UK on a Standard Visitor visa?

Up to 6 months per visit, with limited exceptions (for example, certain medical or academic visits).

Can I work in the UK on a Visitor visa?

No. Paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person is not permitted, except for certain permitted paid engagements.

What documents should I avoid relying on as evidence?

Documents such as old bank statements (over 1 year), credit card statements, hotel or flight bookings, travel insurance, and a sponsor’s utility or council tax bills are listed by UK Visas and Immigration as less useful evidence.

How long does it take to get a decision?

Usually within 3 weeks of completing the application, identity verification and document submission.
